John Nyirenda Steps Down as Given Katuta’s Running Mate

Independent Presidential candidate Given Katuta’s running mate, John Nyirenda, has withdrawn from the position ahead of the August 13, 2026 General Election.

Nyirenda communicated his decision in a letter addressed to the Chief Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), formally informing the Commission that he would no longer serve as Rev. Dr. Given Katuta’s running mate.

He said the decision was made voluntarily following consultations with his family, friends and traditional leaders.

Nyirenda has since asked the ECZ to take note of his withdrawal with immediate effect. He also attached a copy of his National Registration Card (NRC) for identification and verification.

His withdrawal places Ms. Katuta among a growing number of presidential candidates whose running mates have stepped down ahead of the August 2026 General Election.

The development follows similar withdrawals involving Citizens First presidential candidate Harry Kalaba and Organized People’s Party (OPP) presidential candidate Dr. Brian Mushimba.

Meanwhile, the Constitutional Court is yet to determine the legal implications of such withdrawals, including whether presidential candidates whose running mates have stepped down will remain eligible to contest and receive votes despite their names already appearing on the ballot papers.
