President Hakainde Hichilema has committed to reaching out to former president Edgar Lungu in an effort to resolve their differences and promote unity in Zambia. This announcement was made during the 125th anniversary celebrations of the Reformed Church in Zambia (RCZ) held at Lusaka’s showgrounds yesterday.

In his address, President Hichilema emphasized his government’s dedication to fostering love and unity across the nation, irrespective of political affiliations. He underscored the detrimental effects of conflict on society and stressed the importance of leaders setting a positive example.

The President’s commitment to unity was in response to a call from RCZ Moderator Ackso Banda, who urged Hichilema to continue efforts in uniting the country. Acknowledging this request, Hichilema assured the congregation that he would extend a hand to his predecessor, Edgar Lungu, to facilitate open dialogue and reconciliation.

“I heard your message loud and clear on unity to continue uniting the country. We will do our part to reach out to our colleagues, including ECL himself, so that we can talk to each other,” Hichilema stated. He further highlighted the foundational values of love, unity, tolerance, and mutual respect, which he believes are essential for national progress.

Hichilema also expressed his government’s desire to avoid the unrest seen in other countries, advocating for peaceful coexistence and collaboration. “No leader must visualize a Zambia where they smoke in Cairo Road, where they smoke in Chipata. That’s not our role. Our role is about extending our hands to each other. It’s important, and you can count on us,” he affirmed.

President Hichilema called on the church to continue partnering with the government to promote unity and development. He reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and harmony to ensure that Zambia remains a nation where diverse communities can coexist and thrive together.
